First Thursday on Main Street in Columbia is a celebration of the arts, fine dining, music and the new spirit of downtown Columbia.
What started as one business Frame of Mind having an art show to attract more business to their store over five years ago, has grown into a full blown celebration that takes place the first Thursday of each month.
The venue which was once limited to just a couple of blocks has grown to encompass the entire length of the downtown portion of Main Street. There are over 18 restaurants, several art galleries, floral shops, hair salons and many other retail establishments that participate each month.
Each first Thursday around 5:30 PM hundreds of people begin to gather to stroll amongst the many establishments sampling food, looking at works of art by local artists, listening to live music, and generally just having a great time.
Michaels Café and Good Life Café are relatively new comers to the event but have wasted no time getting into the spirit of the Main Street celebration. This video shows the talented musicians in Flat Out Strangers that performed at Good Life Café during the October event.

Sumter SC Veteran Awarded the Nation of ...

James Prosser was an ordinary soldier who happened to be involved in one of the most extraordinary battles in the history of the world. The D-Day invasion changed the course of history forever. The 29th Infantry Division of which James Prosser was a member played a decisive role when it successfully assaulted Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, as part of the greatest amphibious invasion in history. The D-Day landings turned the tide of World War II and marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.
On this beautiful morning in Sumter, South Carolina on the steps of the County Courthouse people gathered to honor a soldier that had completed his call of duty over two thirds of a century earlier. The attendees were residents of the Sumter community along with officers and enlisted personnel from Shaw Air Force Base and politicians both local and statewide. Mr. Prosser was being awarded "Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor of the Republic of France" presented by Monsieur Benard D. Marie. The order is the highest decoration in France and was bestowed on behalf of the grateful Nation of France for the sacrifices Mr. Prosser and so many of his fellow soldiers made on that heroic day so long ago.
During the ceremony the flags of both France and United States were presented by the Sumter High School ROTC Color Guard. The National Anthem of each Nation was played by the Fort Jackson Military Band. The staff of Agapé Hospice of Sumter was proud to attend the award ceremony and hosted a reception that followed the event for the family and guests of Mr. Prosser.
